A question for devout christians.?

I am not talking about the people who claim to be christians, but then don't practice what they preach. If your bible states that your god loves all of his/her children equally, then hell doesn't exist right? If he/she loves all of his/her children unconditionally why would he/she condemn them to eternal damnation? That seems pretty contradictory to me. How do you explain this?
