Cigarette additives?

Why don't smokers stand up to tobacco companies? Smoking would be a lot less harmful if it weren't for all the additives. I would venture out to say that a lot of smokers, indeed, enjoy smoking. they would probably continue to smoke out of their own will, with the absence of added addicting substances. Also, why do cigarette companies add lethal chems to their tobacco? What is the purpose? Would it be possible to form a smoker's strike? The government/FDA is not going to step in because they are in bed with the cigarette companies. Thoughts?
