Remodeling a fireplace/chimney?

I purchased a home recently and want to remodel an old fireplace/chimney. It's black with a long pipe sticking out of wall, and the front consists of two little foldable doors. It's cute and all, but I still want to maybe restore same or replace with newer version. What are your suggestions?
