They spend so much money on advertising for alcohol. The companies are trying to suggest that there is a use or proper role for alcohol. Wine drinkers are sophisticated. Certain beers are the right beers to drink at a beach party. Successful business people drink a certain brand of whiskey. The reality is that most of it tastes bad and is not necessary to drink in any setting.
